Emilie lost a lot of hair after pregnancy, but got a boost after trying hair vitamins.

Emilie Silseth (24) wanted to boost her hair growth and joined as a test subject for the hair vitamin Hair Luxious.

Her hair was assessed before and after the test by hairdresser Nina Angvik Mathisen, but before we get their verdict we need to look at Emilie's hair situation before the test started.

In the winter Emilie went to the hairdresser to have her hair assessed before she tried Hair Luxious.

When she had a baby a year and a half ago, she quickly noticed it was taking a toll on her hair.

“I shed throughout the whole breastfeeding period. I actually have very thick hair, and usually have to have it thinned out at the hairdresser, but I lost a lot,” she says.

After the breastfeeding period her hair had started to grow back, but it was going slowly.

Short hair around the hairline

“Now it stands straight up like a crown around my head,” she said in January of the troublesome post-breastfeeding hair.

So she wanted to test Hair Luxious, developed by the Norwegian supplement producer Good For Me. Hair Luxious is no miracle cure, but a multivitamin made up of 25 natural vitamins and minerals put together to affect the hair from within. It was therefore important that she used the vitamins for at least three months to see whether it would work.

Before Emilie started the course, her hair was assessed by Nina, who runs the salon Perfect Hair at Briskeby in Oslo.

“Emilie still has thick hair, but the shedding has concentrated around the hairline. Here the hair is only a few centimetres long. It will be interesting to see whether it thickens up faster at the front and at the nape,” Nina said in January.

“The hair grew quickly!”

In April, Emilie was back at Perfect Hair to see whether three months of Hair Luxious had helped her fringe, and both she and Nina were pleased with the result:

“The short hairs are much longer than last time, and there is much less difference between the hair at the front and the rest. It has also got longer at the nape,” says Nina.

She stresses that the hair would have grown somewhat during this period anyway, but that Emilie's hair is much more even now and that you can no longer see a clear difference between the post-breastfeeding hair and the rest.

“It is fun to see so clearly that there has been a positive change,” says Nina.

Emilie herself has found that her hair grew faster than usual and has got back the same thickness as before the shedding started.

“I have had it cut twice since January because it has grown so fast. Before, my hair stood straight up at the front, but it does not any more, and finally I can have a high ponytail again without the little rat's tail at the nape,” she says, adding:

“I am pleased with the result. If I get pregnant again, I will start earlier, so I avoid the short fringe. It was fun to actually see that Hair Luxious works, and not just read about it.”

What can affect your hair

It is normal to lose between 100 and 150 strands daily, but in some periods this can increase. Hair is affected by several internal factors such as stress, diet and illness.

Pregnancy and birth can be a strain on the body. On top of that, hormonal changes mean many people experience losing more hair after the birth, while breastfeeding demands a lot of energy.

“It varies a great deal from person to person how the hair changes after pregnancy. Some lose hair all over the head, while others only lose it at the hairline. The hair at the hairline is a different type of hair with a shorter lifespan than the rest, so that may be why some lose extra hair there,” says Nina.

How Hair Luxious works

A balanced diet is important for maintaining hard-wearing, healthy hair. Foods such as bread, eggs, cheese, vegetables and various kinds of meat and fish are important sources of nutrition.

Although Hair Luxious cannot replace a healthy diet, the supplement can make sure you get all the nutrients your hair needs — even during hectic periods.

The supplement is one of the bestsellers from Good For Me, and although it works as a multivitamin, it is put together specifically to have a beneficial effect on the hair.

These are some of the active ingredients:

Biotin: contributes to normal hair growth.
Copper: contributes to normal pigmentation of skin and hair.
Selenium and zinc: maintain the hair.
